More than 10 selections and the Hérisson d'Or prize at the France Nature Environnement international festival
It was on the occasion of World Endangered Species Day on May 11, 2021 and as part of Africa Month that the Ushuaïa TV channel broadcast its event documentary FÉLINS NOIR SUR BLANC. Co-produced with the company Bonne Pioche Télévision, this new film follows the strong and contrasting artistic line of the Poitevin photographer, Laurent Baheux, who embodies his own character. We thus share for 52 minutes in black & white, Laurent's daily life in the heart of the Kenyan savannah and alongside the large fauna of the black continent, free and wild in its environment.
The lion is the common thread of the film because it is also the artist's favorite animal. "The lion is the animal that fascinates me the most because it perfectly illustrates the mixture of strength and fragility." he explains. And around the king of animals parade the scenes and portraits of the other species populating its ecosystem, such as the discreet leopard and the lively cheetah which play precious supporting roles.
SHAKE UP THE CODES TO AVOID EMOTION
The animal sequences of FÉLINS NOIR SUR BLANC are shot with finesse and sensitivity by the director, Mathieu Le Lay. Mathieu shakes up the codes of animal documentary with a monochrome aesthetic approach that takes precedence over the naturalist vision. A striking encounter... a revealing light... a graphic composition... each scene magnifies a subject, asks a question, tells a story, arouses an emotion.
The photographs taken by Laurent accompany the images shot by Mathieu, thus creating an original universe punctuated with intimacy, tenderness and poetry. FÉLINS NOIR SUR BLANC transforms the animal documentary into a televised fable which opens in the preamble with a quote dear to the photographer:
"No cage or enclosure,
No circus or zoo,
Only free, in the wild,
Captivity is a torture,
For animals, as for men."
