WILD AFRICA
Some natural environments excite the imagination more than others - the jungles of Borneo, the Sahara desert and the Arctic ice floes, for example.
Their names alone are an invitation to travel and explore. The African savannah is one such place.
Home to the lion king, the mischievous monkey, comedy warthogs and graceful giraffes, this land,
where immense nomadic herds of herbivores run free, awakens in each of us feelings of both exoticism and familiarity.
This great wilderness is threatened by fragmentation due to soaring human populations
and the incapacity of political powers to organize the sharing of land and the wealth it contains.
The savannah thoroughly deserves to be put in the spotlight, so that we can marvel at it and, also, be alerted to its degradation.
Laurent Baheux shares with us a series of fortuitous, funny and moving encounters.
By highlighting the look or the posture of the subject, he reflects an approach or interpretation,
which takes precedence over the documentary vision.
In this way he develops a new perception of the creatures of the Savannah, as ‘animal people’,
almost deserving of a place in our personal universe, among our holiday snaps and our family albums.
This sense of universality is further strengthened by quotes from intellectuals,
who consider man's relationship with nature,
inviting us to meditate on the absolute need
for greater solidarity between all living beings.
